Christ’s Hospital Theatre

In 1974 a purpose-built theatre was created for the School as a space for teaching drama and presenting School productions as well as external productions.

The Theatre was completed in 1975 following designs by the renowned architect Bill Howell, who was also the architect for the Young Vic. The brief for the venue required a multi-purpose space that would allow for differing staging and auditorium layout across the performance spectrum. The theatre offers many configurations to both performers and audience alike and can be used as a ‘thrust’, ‘end on’ or, as per the original design, as an ‘in the round’ space. These variations of seating and auditorium layout allow the theatre to take on a different atmosphere depending on the demands of the show being presented and can seat an audience of up to 500

We aim to provide a wide and varied programme to attract, entertain, inform and inspire both the School and the community. We have featured classical and modern drama; children’s theatre; music; comedy; ballet and dance; opera and many well-known speakers. In addition to housing Christ’s Hospital’s drama department and student productions, this fully-equipped, modern theatre provides a venue for a wide range of professional entertainment, including top quality theatre and music. These productions are open to the public and tickets can be purchased online and are also publicised in our termly programme.
