Visitor mornings for anyone interested in trying bowls are being held 10am on Sunday 24th April and 10am on Saturday 7th May at the Club House located behind the Princess Royal Hospital and Southdowns Park, on the perimeter road with access from Colwell Road and the Lewes Road at ‘The Birch’ Roundabout (RH16 4EX). No equipment or experience needed but please wear flat-soled shoes.
In 1948 St. Francis Hospital staff formed a Hospital Bowls Section with Hospital Management Committee permission for a restricted bowling green on an area of lawn betweeen Linden House Nurse’s Home and the Chapel opposite the main building. A new site was found at ‘Beechmont’ in 1954 for a 4-rink Bowling Green again with support from the Hospital Authorities.
A new hospital, now the Princess Royal Hospital, was announced in the early 1980’s and the Hospital Authority allocated another site for a new 6-rink bowling green which opened in May 1987, the old site becoming the entrance road and car parking. This green remains the proud home of the St. Francis Bowling Club, a component of the St. Francis Social and Sports Club, with a pre-Covid membership of over 70 and an active member of The Mid Sussex Bowls League being “2021 Area 2 Winners” together with participation in several other leagues and competitions. Bowling green maintenance together with the rebuilding of the club pavilion and facilities over the last 10 years is undertaken by our dedicated membership team.
