Horsham Hospital League of Friends

Horsham Hospital has a long history of involvement with volunteers – the first 6-bedded cottage hospital was opened in Horsham in 1892 funded by voluntary subscriptions through a public appeal.   In 2019 the League of Friends of Horsham celebrated 60 years of continuing this tradition of community volunteering through it’s fundraising activities.

Over those years, more than £2,000,000 has been raised to provide additional equipment and improve services for the patients, staff and visitors to the hospital and in the community.  As NHS resources and budgets are limited, the League provides extras which improve the services. The fundraising activities include a tea-bar and shop, a Summer Fete, a Christmas Tree Festival, street collections and book sales.  Before the pandemic struck, there were more than 100 volunteers serving in the tea-bar and the shop and also helping to maintain the gardens.

Over the past 12 months funding has been provided for two new ECG machines for the cardiology out-patient service and extra equipment within the physio departments to assist the rehabilitation of bariatric patients after amputation.  Staff have benefited from additional lockers to ensure their personal belongings are kept safe.  In the community the League has supported the Phoenix Stroke Club in their building project to improve their facilities and we are working with St Catherine’s Hospice to provide support and training for carers in the community.  Also during the pandemic, we were able to support the Food Bank at Horsham Matters and the dementia services at Age UK Horsham.

Although many of our fundraising activities were restricted during the pandemic the tea-bar and shop reopened in April.

The League of Friends is managed by a committee of Trustees and as life returns to some semblance of normality we require some new Trustees, particularly people with PR / communication/ organisational skills and additional volunteers to continue our support for the hospital. Our Trustees and committee meet six times a year and volunteers can support us by offering their time from as little as 4 hours per month.

Staff at Horsham hospital have worked extremely hard during the pandemic and by joining the League of Friends you can support them and this provides an excellent opportunity to give something back to the community.
