Crawley children’s home receives Good Ofsted rating

Significant improvements have been made at Teasel Close children’s home in Crawley, which is run by West Sussex County Council. Ofsted rated the home as ‘good’ in all areas following a reinspection on 8 and 9 November 2022, after Teasel was rated ‘inadequate’ by inspectors earlier this year.

The visit focused on the experience and progress of the children and young people at the home, how they are helped and protected and the effectiveness of leadership.

In the report, Ofsted said:

• Staff know the children well and have a good understanding of their individual needs and vulnerabilities
• Managers have developed and implemented a comprehensive action plan to improve safeguarding practice
• A more aspirational approach is being taken to helping children engage in activities and develop their social and independent living skills
• Practice relating to the assessment and management of risk has improved significantly
• Staff are familiar with the health needs of the children, and take steps to promote a healthy lifestyle

Jacquie Russell, Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, said: “West Sussex County Council is determined to provide the best possible support for the vulnerable children and young people we care for.

“I am delighted that Ofsted recognise the positive improvements that have been made at Teasel Close and concluded that we are providing a good standard of service.

“While we were extremely disappointed with the findings of the previous inspection, the latest report demonstrates that we will take immediate and appropriate action to ensure we maintain our commitment to putting children first and delivering a standard of service our young people and their families deserve.

“This outcome is testament to the dedication and hard work of all our staff across the children’s residential care service. They have worked at pace to make improvements and I am proud of the support they show to all the children we care for every day.”
