Celebrations as the first of three West Sussex children’s homes reopens

Bright Star children’s home was officially opened at an event on Thursday, 11 November 2021.

This follows on from an extensive internal residential review where the current needs of West Sussex children, the condition of the County Council’s homes, staffing levels and training were considered.

West Sussex County Council has subsequently invested heavily to increase local placements for our children, in partnership with disabled children, the local parent carer forum, occupational therapists and other agencies.

Bright Star, located in Worthing, has been created to offer children a state-of-the-art home with all the facilities and resources they will need to thrive.

The two wings of the home provide the following services:

• From Galaxy wing, an enhanced short breaks service for up to four children with profound and multiple learning disabilities.
• From Milky Way wing, a full-time home for up to six children with learning disabilities and autism, enabling them to live closer to their families.

The newly designed home includes single personalised bedrooms, fully accessible shared living spaces and bathrooms, a sensory room and specialist independence kitchens. All outside areas have undergone significant transformation to create interactive and accessible play and learning spaces for children in the home.

Paul Marshall, County Council Leader and Jacquie Russell, Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, officially reopened Bright Star alongside Tim Loughton, MP for East Worthing and Shoreham.

Cllr Russell said: “I am delighted to formerly open Bright Star. This is a wonderful home where our children will be supported by our caring staff to thrive in and achieve their potential. Children and staff were involved in helping to design Bright Star and that really shows in what is a magnificent facility that we are all immensely proud of.”

Bright Star is one of three West Sussex County Council-owned children’s homes to have undergone extensive refurbishment.

As a result of this exciting expansion of our residential services, we are currently recruiting enthusiastic Residential Child Care Workers across our entire residential portfolio. Our current open homes are all rated Outstanding by Ofsted. A range of jobs are available, visit our webpage to find out more and apply.
