Members return to the chamber for Full Council meeting

West Sussex County Council members returned to the chamber last week for the first Full Council meeting in person since before the Covid-19 pandemic began.

There were 55 members at County Hall in Chichester for the meeting which was held last Friday (22.10.21). Although the law requires members to be in the room to vote, seven members also took part via video link for the non-decision making items on the agenda.

Two appointments were made during the meeting. Councillor Paul Linehan has joined the Performance & Finance Scrutiny Committee to fill an existing vacancy, while Councillors Zack Ali and Ashvin Patel joined the Community, Highways and Environment Scrutiny Committee in place of Councillor Gary Markwell and to fill a vacancy respectively.

Business included the Cabinet Member for Children and Young People providing members with an update on the Children’ Services Improvement journey and the recent Ofsted visit. The Leader and Cabinet also spent two hours answering questions from fellow councillors on a range of topics across the Council’s various services to residents.

After Question Time, two Notices of Motion were heard and agreed. The first Notice of Motion, proposed by the Conservative Group, was about the runway capacity at Gatwick Airport. The second, proposed by the Liberal Democrats, was on the use of Council owned land. The second Notice of Motion was agreed including an amendment proposed by Conservative Councillor Janet Duncton.
